It’s My Child Too is an educational program developed for teenaged fathers by Purdue University. The program helps young fathers learn how to participate in the healthy development of their children. The group cost is $100 (Scholarships are available).
Stereotypes usually portray young fathers as irresponsible and neglectful. Findings indicate, however, that young fathers typically want to be involved in the lives of their children. As many non-custodial parents know, this is not always an easy thing to do. Teenage fathers have to overcome even more obstacles than do most adults to be and stay connected with their children. Among these difficulties are:
- a lack of emotional and financial readiness;
- a deficiency of child development knowledge;
- high levels of stress and few coping resources;
- a dearth of communication and relationship skills necessary for constructive interaction with their children’s mothers and their parents;
- a general ignorance of the paternity process and their legal rights and obligations;
- and an overwhelming absence of services aimed at helping them meet their responsibilities.
